In year 1985 at Rice University by group of scientists namely Harold Kroto, James Heath, Sean O’Brien, Robert Curl and Richard Smalley the first Buckminsterfullerene molecule was discovered and it was named after architect Richard Buckminster Fuller, known for popularizing geodesic dome. Any molecule made fully of Carbon is fullerene. The structure of Fullerene is similar to Graphite.

It was named Buckyball because of molecules unusual spherical arrangement, since scientists gone on to discover megatubes, buckytubes, nana ‘onions’ and nanotubes.

For use in electronics, nanotechnology and many other fields of science, wide research has been done with the unique chemistry of the family of particles.
